Experts had been warning for years that a big earthquake would anytime hit Nepal as the country lies on a geological fault line where the tectonic plates are constantly moving below the earth`s surface.
On 25 April 2015 the pent-up energy got released creating a destructive earthquake measuring 7.8 Ritcher scale. The country´s population were not prepared for it and resulting in massive casualties and structural damage killing more than 8.000 people in less than a minute. More than 16,000 suffered injuries.
On May 12, a new earthquake of 7.3 magnitude shook the country again. The double quake left at least 8,700 dead in Nepal, more than 1,000 public health institutions were damaged, 28,572 classrooms were destroyed. If the first earthquake had not occurred on a Saturday, hundreds of lives of school-age children would have been lost in an instant.
